ENGLISH. PAST SIMPLE REGULAR VERBS.

 

         Past simple (regular verbs)

1. The past simple of regular verbs is formed by adding -ed to the infinitive of the verb

• start → started
• kill → killed
• jump → jumped

2. If the verb ends in '-e', we add '-d'

• agree → agreed
• like → liked
• escape → escaped

3. If the verb ends in a vowel + a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled

• stop → stopped
• plan → planned

4. If a verb ends in consonant + '-y', we take off the 'y' and add '-ied'

• try → tried
• carry → carried        

5. If the verb ends in a vowel + '-y', we add '-ed'

• play → played
• enjoy → enjoyed
